How and Why to Make the First Move on Bumble

Bumble was founded in 2014 as a way to help create empowering relationships. In our community, women make the first move by starting the conversation with a match. This helps dynamics start on an equal footing, and hopefully leads to kinder, more respectful connections.

If you’re a woman in a heterosexual match, simply click on the person you want to chat with in your Match Queue, and then send something to get the chat going. For men in a heterosexual match, you’ll wait to be messaged (or, to show that you’re really interested, you can extend a match). In non-heterosexual couples, anyone is able to make the first move and get the chat going.

We know that it can be intimidating to put yourself out there, but we believe it’s worth it. Here’s what our community says about making the first move:

“You have nothing to lose. I doubted that I would ever find someone on a dating app, and guess what? I’ve found my soulmate and now we’re married!” —Gianna, Pennsylvania

“Making the first move on Bumble turned out to be the best decision I ever made! If you’re nervous to make a move, chances are pretty good that the person on the other end is nervous too. Take the risk—I did and found the love of my life!” —Carly, Oklahoma

“Making the first move just leads the way for better opportunities and perhaps the best time of your life! People who make the first move create memories they never forget. Be brave and relaxed—Bumble will teach you how to roll with the punches!” —Marissa, Texas

Bumble has now grown far beyond a dating app into a networking platform, allowing people of all genders to make connections in all areas of their lives, whether that means you’re seeking a romantic relationship on Bumble Date, making new friendships on Bumble BFF, or growing your professional network on Bumble Bizz. And we believe that regardless of what you’re looking for and if you find it (which we hope you do!), making the first move can help create more equal connections.

For pointers on how to make the first move, we’ve got conversation starters that you can use, advice on what to do if you’re nervous to send the first message, and tips on how to get to know a Bumble match. Good luck!
