During SXSW, we hosted a panel with Forbes/Women @ Forbes. The brave – and totally badass – Amani Al-Khatahtbeh spoke about how challenging it is for her to be invited into conversations as a woman of color wearing a hijab.
As women, we’re cognizant of the unfair disadvantage we have compared to men. While this is definitely the case, Al-Khatahtbeh shone a light on how much more difficult life is for her. Everyday, she faces discrimination as a Muslim woman in the U.S. She elaborated, stating how as women we’ve recently been encouraged to “lean in” and claim our place at the table of opportunity. As a Muslim woman, Al-Khatahtbeh has to climb walls and knock down doors to have the chance to even be in the same room as the table.
She began her company, MuslimGirl.com, to create a platform to stand up for and connect with Muslim women as well as to educate non-Muslims on Islam. Al-Khatahtbeh aims to break down the hateful stereotypes surrounding Muslim women and connect all women using the unifying spirit of sisterhood.
At MuslimGirl.com, Al-Khatahtbeh is “paving the way toward a world in which every woman can raise her head without fear of being attacked for her gender or beliefs.”
At Bumble, we’re honored to have the opportunity to stand with Amani on #MuslimWomensDay and amplify Muslim women’s thoughts and stories on social media.
As a company that aims to empower women, we think it’s important to support Muslim women-led businesses. We encourage you to support them as well – share the love on social media! As women, we are always stronger together. Read on to learn about 8 black Muslim women-owned businesses.
