When Vancouver locals Natalie and Andrew appeared on each other’s feeds, swiping right was an easy decision. But after checking his profile again after matching, Natalie discovered that Andrew’s location had moved from a couple miles away to an entirely different country.
While the two had matched in Canada, he was now in Seattle — and Natalie naturally felt disappointed. Upon reaching out, Andrew quickly clarified that he was simply on a vacation and that he’d be home soon to take Natalie on their first date. Read more about this couple’s love story below!
How long did it take to meet up after matching? What did you do for your first meet up/date?
We first met on Friday, November 11th just four days after we matched. We planned to meet at a cocktail lounge in Vancouver for a drink. We proceeded to have two glasses of wine there, followed by a gin martini at another cocktail lounge down the street. After realizing that we had a mutual friend, we texted him to get his opinion of us dating and ended up meeting him at a restaurant for one more drink! After that many cocktails, we were desperate for food so we grabbed some authentic Mexican fare to fill us up… then we called it a night.
Natalie, what was the first message you sent on Bumble?
“That Photo! ?”
Andrew, what was your first reply back?
A lame GIF saying, “Thanks!“
Natalie, how did this match feel different?
He was equal parts handsome, intelligent, and funny. I used to have to choose between just two of those.
Andrew, how did this match feel different?
The rhythm and ease at which we riffed off of each other was something I hadn’t experienced before.
Natalie, what was your first impression of Matt? How did you feel before the first date?
I was immediately impressed. Andrew was a distinguished gentlemen. A man I wanted to be around.
Honestly, I was quite tired that day. I thought about rescheduling, but something about his conversational demeanor made me want to meet him as soon as possible. I said to myself, “Just one glass of wine and then it’s home to Netflix.”
Andrew, what was your first impression of Natalie? How did you feel before the first date?
I was excited. That being said, I was out late the night before and quite dramatically hungover. Thankfully my friend (now one of my groomsmen) bullied me from canceling over a greasy brunch.
When I met her, I thought Natalie was hilarious, energetic, and spunky. She was welcoming, and she immediately put me at ease.
Natalie, what do you consider a unique aspect of your relationship now?
We ignore the bullshit. We rise above the elements of everyday life that get some people down but don’t matter in the long run. I have never laughed so much with — and at — someone.
Andrew, what do you consider a unique aspect of your relationship now?
We have a remarkable partnership, built on mutual respect for one another and an equality that’s unparalleled. It’s hard to choose who is smarter, funnier, more helpful, or more supportive — or who spends more time on their hair than the other. We both bring our A game to the table.
Where are you now? Where are you headed in the future?
Great question! On Christmas Eve 2017, exactly one year since officially “going steady,” we got engaged!
