At Bumble Inc., we regularly check in with our community to hear both what’s working for you and what we can improve to make dating safer, healthier, and more enjoyable. Our most recent research made one thing very clear: our members are anxious about the authenticity of their matches. Worldwide, respondents cited fake profiles and the risk of scams as their top concerns when online dating*. Almost half of women surveyed** (46%) said their number one issue while dating online was not knowing if the person they’re talking to is who they say they are.
To help you feel confident while making new connections, Bumble has launched Deception Detector™, harnessing artificial intelligence (A.I.) to weed out fake, spam, or scam profiles. Of those accounts identified as spam/scam profiles, Bumble Inc.’s testing showed that Deception Detector™ supported in blocking 95% of these accounts automatically.
Others will go through a verification process to ensure they’re authentic, and could be removed from Bumble altogether. This Deception Detector™ A.I. model is supported by our dedicated team of human moderators, who prioritise our community’s safety above all.
Deception Detector™ isn’t Bumble’s first foray into the use of machine learning to help combat abusive behaviour online. Among the many safety features within the Bumble app itself is Private Detector, a tool that uses A.I. to automatically blur a potential nude image shared within a chat. It’ll then notify you that you’ve been sent something that’s been detected as inappropriate; it’s up to you to decide whether to view or block the image. Private Detector and Deception Detector™ technologies are in use in both Bumble and Bumble for Friends.
