Inside Bumble’s $1 Million-Plus Commitment to Fight Anti-Black Racism

A year ago, in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd, Bumble pledged to stand in solidarity with Black communities and the Black Lives Matter movement in the fight to dismantle white supremacy and end systemic racism. Here’s an update on our progress.

Making donations to organizations doing the work

To date, Bumble has made donations totaling over $1 million to organizations including the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Black Women’s Health Imperative, the Austin Justice Coalition, Community Bail Funds, and the Hurston/Wright Foundation.

Better supporting our employees

Bumble has also been working to improve internal policies supporting our workforce through what, for many, has been a year marred by trauma. We’ve matched employee donations to organizations supporting racial justice. We’re providing flexible, paid time off for those grieving or simply needing to rest as racist inequities and injustices have been exposed and challenged. The company has launched a pilot coaching program for team members from historically underrepresented groups to support both their professional development and personal goals.

From now on, we’ll be recognizing Juneteenth—the day marking and celebrating the emancipation of those who’d been enslaved in the U.S.—across the company as a paid holiday. (In 2021, we’re adding a week of paid time off for every employee the week after Juneteenth, in recognition of how difficult and exhausting the pandemic year has been.)

Rooting out racism across our business

Bumble will continue to audit our app and its underlying technology as part of our work to address systemic racism within our business. This work to date has included a partnership with anti-hate nonprofit the Anti-Defamation League to improve reporting capabilities, using artificial intelligence to identify hate speech and symbols—and using the ADL’s research and terminology as our standard.

We’ve introduced new requirements for our partners, vendors, and suppliers, asking that they acknowledge our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and provide details of their own values and goals.

Making a commitment to the future

Bumble acknowledges just how much work remains to be done. We’ll continue updating our community on our progress as we seek to root out racism, bias, and inequity across our platforms and within our company.
