Truett & Bimal

Met on Bumble in 2018

One was about to take a dating app pause. The other had just signed up for Bumble. Then a friend stepped in—and changed everything.

They say we get by with a little help from our friends, and in Truett’s case, that help came in the form of one well-timed swipe on Bumble.

In 2018, Bimal was too swamped by his congressional campaign to focus on dating, and nearly deleted his profile. Meanwhile, Truett had just downloaded Bumble out of curiosity but was letting his friend Marette do the swiping. When she came across Bimal’s profile and showed it to Truett, his first thought was, “He had a wholesome smile and seemed down-to-earth.”

That spark led to dinner at True Food Kitchen in Dallas, where the conversation was effortless. “There was never an awkward break in the conversation,” Bimal recalls. “We talked for hours — as if we had known each other a long time.” A few days later, they met again for a second date. By the end of that evening, Truett had already agreed to help with Bimal’s campaign.

Good Things Come in Threes

Travel had always been the couple’s shared language, so when a work conference brought Bimal to New York just three months into their relationship, he invited Truett along.

Once the conference wrapped, the evening was theirs, and they spent it dancing together to a live band. “It was so magical and so memorable for us that we ended up hiring a similar band to perform at our wedding years later.”

Almost three years later, Bimal wove that same spirit of magic into his proposal. He told Truett he was getting headshots for work, but in reality, a photographer was coming to capture the moment. Bimal had created a custom-illustrated book of their story, and when Truett reached the last page, Bimal was on one knee.

We both look to each other to help put things into perspective when we are stressed. It’s a much-needed balance.

Tying the Knot (Literally) in Ireland

Wedding planning came quickly, and so did the question of where. Both fans of The Crown, they found their perfect venue an hour outside Dublin at Kilkea Castle.

Their celebration wove together Irish and Indian traditions, from Indian folk dancers and a procession on horseback to exchanging varmalas (flower garlands) and a Celtic handfasting ritual. And, in true Fourth of July fashion, the night ended with a burst of fireworks.

Life and Love After the “I Dos”

In the months that followed, the pace shifted from campaign trails and castle weddings to something slower, more rooted. Travel still plays a role, but it now shares space with the small, everyday rituals they’ve grown to cherish: walking through the city and talking about life, exploring new neighborhoods, or lingering in front of homes to admire the architecture.

“We love touring homes in our free time,” they say. What started as a weekend hobby has grown into a passion project—designing their future home while also working on a renovation. “It gives us a chance to work together,” Truett says.

Bimal is the planner, Truett the adventurer. One leans Type A, the other Type B, but they meet in the middle when it matters most. “We both look to each other to help put things into perspective when we are stressed. It’s a much-needed balance,” they say.
