Support after being fetishized as a trans woman

In partnership with Trans Lifeline

Some of the most difficult aspects transgender women face as they negotiate the dating scene are the perceptions, or misperceptions, that come from outside the community. Society often reduces transwomen to a collection of certain body parts rather than full people. The technical term for this reductive behavior is fetishization. If you’re a trans woman of color, this situation is intensified.

If someone on Bumble makes fetishizing comments or makes you feel uncomfortable, we’re here to help. You can use the Block & Report Tool or reach out to our support team. Your safety comes first on Bumble.

And when it comes to taking care of yourself after a harmful interaction, remember:

  • This has nothing to do with you. Release any shame or feelings of inadequacy this may bring up. Those negative emotions belong with the person who saw you as less than the genuine human being you are.
  • Don’t retreat behind your walls. Seek out support from whoever lifts you up and share about your experience.
  • Know that whether you can’t contact your people or just need a little extra love, Trans Lifeline has your back. They’re staffed by trans individuals who understand your experiences and are here to help. Reach Trans Lifeline’s hotline in the US at (877) 565-8860 or Canada at (877) 330-6366.

You should feel good putting your whole self out there, and Trans Lifeline and Bumble are here for you.
