Frequently Asked Questions

What is Bumble?

Bumble was born out of a desire to reinvent the antiquated rules of dating. We empower women by giving them the ability to control the conversation when dating, finding friends, and networking online. Bumble has made it necessary, and therefore acceptable, for women to make the first move. This is extremely significant: Prompting women to initiate the conversation has led to the highest post-match chat rate in the industry. The unique model of putting women in charge and employing robust reporting has allowed Bumble to achieve incomparably low reports of harassment and abuse. Bumble is a safe platform for people to connect in dating, friendship, and networking. Things change when women are in control.

How does Bumble work?

As a social network rooted in promoting kindness, respect, and empowerment, Bumble provides ways for our users to make genuine connections. Bumble is the first app of its kind to bring dating, friend-finding, and career-building to a single platform. Users can swipe and create connections in the following ways:

  • Bumble: A place for users to find potential dates.
  • Bumble BFF: A place for users to form platonic friendship connections.
  • Bumble Bizz: A place for users to swipe for mentorship, networking, and career-building.

Is your app only for heterosexuals?

Bumble is for everyone! The app was originally designed to disrupt traditional gender roles in heteronormative dating, but we have since expanded to same-sex dating as well. On Bumble, women make the first move. In same-sex matches, either person is encouraged to make the first move. The other person has 24 hours to respond, or the connection expires. By prompting our users to be bold and make the first move, 2.9 billion messages have been sent!

How does messaging work on Bumble?

After two users have mutually right-swiped one another, a match is created. After a match is created, you'll see a push notification appear on your phone's lock screen. From here, you can either start a chat or continue swiping through other profiles.

The steps that follow will depend on the user’s gender.

On Bumble, women always make the first move. If she doesn't initiate a conversation within 24 hours, the connection expires.

Men cannot initiate a conversation with women. However, they can show they're especially interested by using the daily 24-hour extend feature.

The above rules do not apply to same-sex or connections made in Bumble BFF. In these cases, either person has 24 hours to make the first move before the connection expires.

Is Facebook the only way to sign up?
Currently, yes, Facebook is the only way to create a Bumble account. We use Facebook to help build your profile by importing your name, age, school, and/or occupation. This speeds up the sign-up process as well as ensuring the information on your profile is genuine and reliable. However, we're currently working on expanding into allowing users to sign up without a Facebook account. Stay tuned!
How can I change my age?
Your date of birth is imported directly from your Facebook profile. In order to change this, you'll need to edit your age in your Facebook settings. Once this update is complete, this change will be reflected on your Bumble profile in 48 - 72 hours.
Why am I not receiving any matches?
The more information you put into your profile, the more chances you have to find a match! You can add up to six photos to your profile and having more photos will increase your chances of receiving right-swipes. We'll let you in on a little secret: Higher quality photos always perform better.
How can I make my profile hidden?

To change your profile to public or hidden, open your "Settings" menu and toggle the "Public Profile" switch to "On" or "Off.

Please note: In order to save the changes you made, you must navigate to another screen in the app.

Switching your public profile to "On" will mean your profile is shown as normal. Switching it to "Off" means your profile will only be shown to existing matches and those who you've swiped right on in the past.

My profile is hidden. Why am I still receiving matches?

When your profile is hidden, it's still visible to your current matches and people you swiped right on before hiding it.

I'm having trouble copying the photo verification gesture. What should I do?

If you're unable to copy the gesture presented, click on the "Need another way?" button to reach out to our Support team for assistance.

Additionally, please ensure that you're in a bright environment and that you're copying the gesture in the photo as closely as possible.

Bear in mind that your profile photos should accurately reflect what you look like. If the photos you're using are 10 years old, you will not pass our photo verification process.

Do I have to pay for Bumble now or is it free?

Bumble is free, and always will be!

We have a few optional premium features to enhance your Bumble experience, such as Bumble Boost and Bumble Coins. Boost unlocks added features, such as seeing users who have already swiped right on your profile, re-matching with expired connections, and extending your matches for an additional 24 hours.

Bumble Coins allow you to send SuperSwipes and make a bold first impression.

Why has my match/message disappeared?

If a connection is no longer visible or if your conversation has disappeared, the user in question has unmatched you, deleted their account, or they've been blocked by Bumble.

Don't worry - there are plenty of bees in the Hive. Keep swiping!

Why isn't my Bumble Boost working?

I don't see anyone in my Beeline.

You may not have anything to see in your Beeline - yet! After signing up for Boost, your admirers will start populating in real-time. Keep in mind that your Beeline will constantly be updating with your admirers based on your search criteria.

It's asking me to pay again.

Bumble Boost subscriptions are profile-specific. If you've deleted your account and created a new one, your Boost subscription will not automatically transfer over to the new profile. Don't worry - our team can take care of this for you! Just reach out to the Support team by clicking on the "Feedback" button in your "Settings" menu.

Where are my expired connections?

When you subscribe to Bumble Boost, you'll be able to rematch with your last five expired matches as well as any new expiring connections.

I'm not happy with my Bumble Boost subscription. How can I get a refund?

As stated in our Terms and Conditions, any purchases made in the Bumble app are non-refundable.

Feel free to read more about our Terms and Conditions here: http://bumble.com/terms

Why did I run out of people to swipe on?

Bumble doesn't limit the amount of people you're able to swipe on. However, if you have narrow search criteria in your Settings, you may be limiting the amount of people you can view.

If you run out of users to swipe on, try widening your search criteria to expand your Hive.

How can I unblock a user?
Once you've blocked a user, it's not possible to unblock them.
Why can't I filter my search by distance?
We don't want you to run out of users to swipe on! While our user base is growing in some countries, we've temporarily removed the distance setting slider. Don't worry - new bees are joining the Hive daily. We'll bring the distance filter back soon!
Where can I download Bumble?
Bumble is available in your App Store and Google Play store! We are currently focusing on iOS and Android, but we’d love to eventually roll out for Windows Phone. We’ll be sure to update on social media and our website when this happens!
Isn’t your app sexist because of the ‘girls go first’ idea?
We designed Bumble to correct a lot of the common problems with apps that include the ability to chat. We based our concept on the feedback from tons of women who were tired of being spammed with annoying messages. That being said, we realize that there are great guys out there who never have and never intend to send any rude messages. That’s why we’ve included the “Extend” option. Also, we have many more updates coming with added functionality for everyone. We’re really sorry if you’re upset or offended in any way by the app’s concept. This is our move in attempting to counter the age-old and often outdated “guys always have to make the first move” idea!
Are there any rules?
Only a few! Please, check our Guidelines and Terms and Conditions to make sure you play safely and responsibly!
Can I go back if I swiped the wrong way?
If you've accidentally swiped left, you can shake your phone to Backtrack on your last decision. Keep in mind you only get three Backtracks at a time. Each Backtrack you use is restored after 3 hours. You can get more Backtracks by sharing your Bumble love on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
Why am I seeing people from an area outside of my own?
Bumble shows you people in or very close to your location. Once you’ve swiped through all of the people in your area, Bumble will automatically find other users in places nearby. We don't want you to run out of people to swipe on! (Besides, who knows who you might find just a little farther away?)
Why can't I start a conversation with somebody I've swiped right on?

After two users have mutually right-swiped one another, a match is created. After a match is created, you'll see a notification appear on your screen. From here, you can either start a chat or continue swiping through other profiles.

After a match has been created, what follows depends on the user’s gender.

On Bumble, women always make the first move. If she doesn't initiate a conversation within 24 hours, the connection expires.

Men cannot initiate a conversation with women. However, they can show that they're especially interested in her by using the daily 24-hour extend feature.

Bumble was designed to counter problematic and antiquated hetero dating norms, so the above rules do not apply to same-sex matches or to connections made in Bumble BFF. In these cases, either person has 24 hours to make the first move before the connection expires.

How can I extend a match?
To extend an expiring connection, click on the expiring profile and choose the option to "Extend This Match" for an additional 24 hours. Please note: You can only extend one match per day, and you can't extend the same match more than once!
Can I get an expired match back?
Expired matches will appear in the app again, so don't worry - you'll get another chance to match with these users. You can also rematch with expired connections instantly with a subscription to Bumble Boost!
How can I recover a deleted match?
It's not possible to recover a match you've deleted. To avoid accidentally deleting a match, Bumble asks you to verify that you want to delete a connection first!
How can I change my location?
Your location will be automatically established by your phone's GPS and cannot be set manually. If you believe your location is incorrect, please contact our Support team so we can update our geo-database!
How can I verify my profile?

Want to verify your profile? Here’s how:

1. Tap the verify button, either in your profile or on another person’s badge.

2. You'll be prompted with an example of one of a hundred random photo poses by Bumble. Take a selfie mimicking that pose and send it to the Bumble administrators using the simple step-by-step verification process outlined in-app.

3. All photos are reviewed by a real person on Bumble’s team!

4. In a few minutes, you'll receive a confirmation or rejection of your verification.

5. Happy swiping!

Why do I have to show my school or job information?
One of the most important aspects of the Bumble experience is that our users provide reliable information on their profiles.

Job and education information provide you with a deeper understanding of who you’re swiping on and who’s swiping on you. Pulling this information from your Facebook profile means these details are more likely to be authentic and reliable.

If you don’t want to show your school or job information for privacy reasons, you can select an old occupation and/or school, change your Facebook information to be less specific, or delete these details from your Facebook profile.

Alternatively, you can deny Bumble access to your work and education information during the account creation process.
