Ethnicity Preferences

What is this feature, and why has Bumble introduced it?

We understand that ethnicity can play a major role in your dating experience. Many of our members have told us that they don’t always feel seen while dating, and that it can be difficult to find people with a similar ethnicity or culture. That’s why we want to make it easier for everyone to connect with the people they’re most interested in. You can now tell us what your ethnicity preferences are, and we’ll try to show you more of the people who match them.

How do I select my ethnicity preferences?

  1. Head to “People” in the Bumble app.
  2. Tap the filters icon in the top right corner.
  3. On the “Basic filters” tab, scroll to “What’s their ethnicity?”
  4. Tap “Select preferences” (if you haven’t added your own ethnicity, you’ll need to do that first).
  5. Choose the ethnicity options you’d most like to see.

How does Bumble define ethnicity?

We define ethnicity as a combination of ethnicity, race, and cultural identity. We know that people’s perceptions may differ, depending on where they’re from and who they are, so we made sure to choose a term that people are generally comfortable with. To help with our definition, we consulted the Pew Research Center, and spoke to members of the Bumble community through research. Through our members, we learned that these terms are often used interchangeably, but that ethnicity was the most understood term to use.

Is it mandatory to select ethnicity preferences?

We introduced ethnicity preferences to help you connect with the people you’re most interested in. It’s totally optional to tell us what your ethnicity preferences are. If you don’t select an ethnicity preference, you’ll see everyone as usual.

If I select my ethnicity preferences, will I still see other people?

We’ll try to show you people who match your preferences first. But depending on the filters you’ve applied, or where you’re based, you may still see other people outside your preferences too.

How many ethnicity preferences can I select?

You choose who you’d like to see, so you can select as many options as you’d like. We’ll try to show you the people who match your preferences first, but when they run out, you may see other people too.

What if my ethnicity preference isn’t listed?

We want everyone to find the connections they’re looking for. So, we’ll continue to evolve our list by following the principles of organizations like the US Census, and listening to members of our community.  If your ethnicity preference isn’t there yet, just let us know.

Why is the list of ethnicity preferences different to the list of ethnicities I can add to my profile?

Our list of ethnicity preferences is based on official sources for ethnicity representation, like the US Census and US Office of Management and Budget (OMB), as well as feedback from our members. We know it’s important for our members to feel represented, included, and able to connect with who they want. That’s why our list of ethnicity preferences will keep evolving as we continue to listen to and learn from our community. If you have any suggestions or feedback, we’d love to hear from you.

Why do I need to add my own ethnicity before I can select my ethnicity preferences?

You’ll need to add your own ethnicity before you can select your ethnicity preferences. This is so we can understand you better, and make sure that everyone selects their ethnicity preferences with genuine intentions. We won’t share your ethnicity with anyone, unless you choose to show it on your profile.

How will Bumble help to keep me safe against discrimination?

We only welcome kindness on Bumble. If you ever feel unsafe, uncomfortable, or experience any type of hate, please report it, so we can take action. We’re always here to support you. You can find out how we help keep Bumble a safe, inclusive, and respectful place in our Community Guidelines

How do I report identity-based hate?

Your safety comes first. Find out how to report someone if you ever feel unsafe, uncomfortable, or experience any type of identity-based hate. We’re here to support you.

What if I don’t have any ethnicity preferences, and I’m open to seeing everyone?

If you don’t have any preferences, and are open to seeing everyone, you won’t need to select any ethnicity preferences. We’ll show you everyone as usual.

I don’t want people to see my profile because my ethnicity matches their preferences. What should I do?

If your ethnicity matches someone’s preferences, they’re more likely to see your profile. People may still see you if you hide your ethnicity from your profile, too. So, if you’re not OK with this, you can completely remove any ethnicity you’ve selected.

When I select my ethnicity preferences, will this affect who sees my profile?

Selecting your ethnicity preferences won’t affect who sees your profile. You’ll still be seen by everyone.
