Romantic Stargazing Date Ideas In Winter  

Gazing and dating tend to go very well together. You can be gazing into each other’s eyes, which is super-romantic. Or you can gaze at the sunset, also very romantic, as is gazing at a beautiful view while holding hands. But what about stars? Gazing at the stars is just instantly romantic, especially if you’re also wishing on them. 

So if you’re looking for some stargazing ideas for your next date, we’ve got some suggestions for you to make sure it’s as magical as it always looks in the movies rather than just the two of you sitting in a muddy field in the winter wondering what you’re meant to be looking at.

We’ll start off with the biggest question. Can you stargaze in the winter? There’s two parts to that question. Firstly, yes you absolutely can stargaze in the winter and it’s actually one of the best times of year to do it. Cold air holds less moisture so the night skies tend to be clearer in the winter than in the summer making it much easier to see the stars.

Another advantage is that you don’t need to stay up as late because it gets darker earlier, whereas a summer stargazing date would mean waiting until well past 11pm to be able to see the stars. It’s also the case that winter in the northern hemisphere is when lots of cool things can be seen.

The other part of the question isn’t so much whether you CAN stargaze in the winter, but whether you SHOULD. Because the thing about winter is that it’s… winter. The coldness that makes the stars easier to see also makes it slightly less easy to sit on the floor looking at them.

But it can still be a magical experience if you get it right. When you wish upon a star your dreams come true, after all, and you’ll be able to take your pick of the brightest stars to wish upon. Here are our tips for making the most of your date under the stars.

Winter stargazing is definitely romantic but only if you’re not too busy shivering to actually be able to look through the telescope. Freezing your boots off is no one’s idea of a romantic date, so be sure to layer up and make sure you’re wearing nice thick wooly socks and waterproof shoes or boots, especially if you’re out in the snow. Gloves, scarves, ear-muffs, whatever else you need to stay warm. You’re bound to look adorable.

It’s going to be cold out there no matter what you wear, so don’t forget to take things along that will help you warm up, and we don’t just mean your date. Chemical heating pads can be handy - literally if you put them inside your gloves, while a flask of hot chocolate, coffee or soup will definitely be your best friend as long as you don’t leave it in the car.

There’s no getting around the fact that you’ll be sitting on the floor out in the countryside in the winter. It may well have snowed. Even with thermal underwear, that’s going to give you the chills so you need to plan ahead. Nice thick blankets and possibly even cushions (for comfort if nothing else) are important along with a shovel to clear away any snow before you even sit down. It might sound like a lot to take on a date but you’d definitely notice if you didn’t.

Staring at the stars is nice of course, but it can get old quickly if you’re doing so without any idea what any of it is. A decent telescope certainly helps to clear things up for you and there’s a few cellphone apps that you can download that will also identify what you’re looking at, so you can tell if it’s Jupiter or just a birthday balloon floating by.

Of course, you don’t need to really understand what you’re looking at and if one of you is a bit of a stargazing nerd, it’s important to remember that you’re there for a date, not an astronomical survey. If you’ve spent most of the evening smooching and may have missed a shooting star or two, that’s still a successful date.

Some of the best places to see the stars may be found with various programs that list out certified sites.These are the ideal locations but anywhere that’s away from the bright lights of the city and ideally high up will give you a good chance at a spectacular sight to gaze at.

Why not go out for a meal beforehand so that your bellies are nice and full of warm food? You can even set the mood with a stars-themed playlist to listen to while you’re driving out into the country. You should probably plan a way to warm up afterwards, whether it’s a trip to a coffee shop or just heading back home for some cuddling.

We’ve talked a lot about taking everything you need to stay warm while stargazing in the winter but that’s easier said than done while sitting on the frozen ground. But that’s not your only option if you’re lucky enough to be able to go on a stargazing truck bed date.

Obviously, you need a truck that you can use and something to help make the truck bed feel more comfortable. A campaign mattress pad, blankets and cushions will help make it cozier and set you up nicely for some romantic stargazing.
