Fun Mini Golf Date Ideas

Have you ever played mini golf? You almost certainly have when you were a kid, or perhaps while hanging out with your friends as a teenager. It’s good, clean, harmless fun. But have you ever had a mini golf date?

Nope, it’s not just something for 12-year-olds, before you ask. Mini golf is for everyone. It doesn’t take as long as a real golf game and you don’t need to have had 100 lessons to be able to hit the ball in the right direction - a win win.

Plus, there’s castles ,dinosaurs, pirates and all kinds of cool obstacles to keep the game lighthearted and fun… You can even enjoy a cocktail going ‘round the course, should you want to.

There’s no pressure, no strings, no expectations, just plenty of laughs, and some healthy competition and as for what the winner gets as a prize, well, we’ll leave that up to the two of you.

So see our mini golf date tips below...

What to wear on a mini golf date?

So you’ve secured the date and time, but what on earth do you wear on a mini golf date? Clearly, it’s not a ‘ball gown and tuxedo’ kind of affair, but more of a cool and casual type of date, so keep that in mind when choosing your outfit. Another factor to consider is whether it’s an indoor or outdoor course.

If it’s outdoors, you need to make sure you’re warm enough, or cool enough, depending on the temperatures. Shivering or sweating your way around the course won’t be a good look and won’t help your game either.

So you’ve got options. Do you go sporty, wearing gym/yoga gear and ready for action, or perhaps a preppy kind of vibe? Whatever you wear certainly needs to be practical, as a short skirt isn’t going to go well with the amount of bending over you’ll be doing to pick your ball up from the holes.

So something that’s flattering - of course - a bit sporty, comfortable to wear, right for the weather and the ideal mixture of casual but also a bit smart. That’s what you’re looking for.

For the guys, it’s a LOT easier to pick a mini golf date outfit, obviously. Any kind of smart-but-sporty clothes will give you the right combination of looking devastatingly handsome and also help you to win the game, which is clearly a big part of what you’re hoping to get from the date. Let’s be honest.

Mini golf date tips

So, what exactly happens on a mini golf date? Well, at its simplest, you meet up at the agreed golf course, get your clubs and balls, then go around the course playing mini golf, trying to get your ball in the hole with the least number of strokes. But it doesn’t have to be that straightforward.

Obviously, you can’t do anything too racy (no ‘strip mini golf’ unless you manage to set up a course in the privacy of your own home) but there’s plenty of ways you can inject extra fun into the date.

Pick your prizes

Depending on how well you know each other, you could allocate prizes. For a first date, a peck on the cheek or a free round of drinks for the overall winner might be the safest bet, but if you’ve been together a bit longer, each hole could bring a little something nice for the winner. But remember to keep it appropriate for wherever you are!

Mix it up a bit

Mini golf is much less serious than proper golf, but that doesn’t mean you need to follow the rules all the time, no matter how relaxed they are. Why not set challenges for each hole, like ‘use your club as a pool cue’ or ‘blow the ball into the hole’? These could be written onto cards (or just printed out from the internet if you need inspiration) and can add a lot of extra laughs. Don’t forget, laughter is the way to most people’s hearts.

Don’t take it too seriously

Over competitiveness can be a serious buzzkill on a date. Try and remember that you’re there to have fun, not to prove which one of you is better at knocking a small ball through a windmill the first time. If you’ve both had fun and hit it off, you’ll both be winners. If one of you ends the date shouting ‘in your face!’ and waving the scorecard around, there’ll be no winners and no other further dates.

Pick a follow-on activity -

Even an 18-hole mini golf course won’t take long for two people to get around. So why not have some follow-on ideas in your back pocket to suggest? Going for a coffee or a drink afterwards can be a nice way to relax, laugh together at some of the more hilarious epic fails and keep on building that bond between you two. Quite often mini golf courses are near other entertainment venues, so if it’s gone well, there’s no reason it needs to be the end of your mini golf date night.

Be supportive

Playing a competitive game like mini golf - silly as it clearly is - gives you both the chance to show your caring and nurturing sides. If one of you is struggling, be supportive, help them out, and even let them cheat. After all, it may be a dragon’s mouth they’re trying to get a ball into right now, but the way you respond to it will tell them a lot about how you’d be there for them in situations that actually matter. You can learn a lot about someone on a mini golf date.
