Bumble Founder Whitney Wolfe Herd: U.S. Companies Need to Step Up and Speak Out on Abortion Access

We at Bumble are deeply disappointed by the April 7 ruling in which one judge in Texas, who has made no secret of his agenda, has decided to halt access to Mifepristone. Mifepristone is a safe, effective abortion medication and has been in use for over two decades.

Mifepristone was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration 23 years ago, following thorough, comprehensive review; this ruling has nothing to do with the pill itself, and everything to do with the curtailing of reproductive freedoms.

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: abortion is healthcare, and healthcare is a human right.

Bumble was founded with gender equality central to its mission. Without access to abortion and other reproductive healthcare necessary to maintain bodily autonomy, we’ll never be free or equal. We believe in the right to choose. The safety, privacy, and freedom to make family planning decisions are critical to equality for all. That includes equitable access to abortion care.

As a multinational, publicly-traded tech company led by many women, we feel it’s our duty not just to provide our workforce with access to reproductive healthcare, but to speak out—and speak loudly—against the retrogression of women’s rights.

At this critical time, we’re asking our corporate peers to join us in unequivocally supporting equal rights for their employees and their customers to make their own reproductive choices.

We’ll continue to support our employees who seek access to the healthcare services they need and organizations committed to reinforcing reproductive rights, including a financial contribution to the Repro Legal Defense Fund.

And we’ll continue to speak up. Banning any form of abortion just means banning safe abortion. We won’t go back.
